What’s the SAMR Model?

Today’s lecture I was introduced to the SAMR Model designed by Dr. Puentedura. Now at first like always my brain was slow to adapt to this, however after going home and doing some more research, I found this website which explains more on what the SAMR Model is all about and it also gives some examples of the different progresses for students in a classroom!

So the SAMR Model is a way for teachers to scaffold the technology they use to be integrated into the classroom. The model acts as a framework through which teachers can assess and evaluate the technology they use in the classroom. I will definitely be thinking about this framework and asking myself questions to make sure I effectively execute technology in my classroom!

It goes without saying that the SAMR model is a very useful tool to help pre-service teachers to always think about their own technology use as they slowly design learning experiences that implement technology  and be able to achieve the next level of the framework.

Altogether, this framework just illustrates that the key to successful technology integration in the classroom is based on the efficient use of technology applications/tools that are appropriate to suit the task. Technology is so beneficial because it provides us with the ability to design our own toolbelt of flexible and innovative resources to help us provide the best education to our students and teach them beyond their expectations!

Week 1 and Me

144121

Okay. So this photo sums up my feelings and thoughts about Week 1. I have to say I was overwhelmed and scared of diving into Week 1 and trying to make my brain work. Yet after listening to the lectures, engaging in the tutorials and collaborating with other students, I feel more relaxed and confident in starting to think about how I can kick butt for Assignment 1. After having a big sticky beak at a past students example of Assignment 1, I can visually see how to go about it and it got my creative juices pumping!

I stumbled onto Sara’s blog and she uploaded a very fascinating and intriguing video  about the importance of ICTs in the classroom. It provides a great insight in the relationship and beneficial facotrs of incorporating ICT in the classroom and the ways it should be used. I strongly recommend checking it out!

So congratulations to completing Week 1! And soldier on for Week 2 🙂

Personal Knowledge Management

One of the Moodle books for EDC3100 was about Personal Knowledge Management or PKM. This is a process or a framework about engaging in Seek, Sense and Share. I understand Seek as the ‘input’ and Sense and Share are the ‘outputs.’

Our PKM is personal and acts as a tool to attempt to make sense of our knowledge in our own world. Thanks to Harold Jarche who explains how and what PKM is.

After comprehending all this knowledge, I decided to create and share a mind map using bubbl.us on my PKM process. Click the image below for a bigger picture!

The Influence of Personal Experience

One of the small activities we were asked to complete was to fill out this paragraph. The ‘correct’ answer can be found here.

The questions that p________ face as they raise ch________ from in_________ to adult are not easy to an _________. Both f______ and m________ can become concerned when health problems such as co_________ arise anytime after the e____ stage to later life. Experts recommend that young ch____ should have plenty of s________ and nutritious food for healthy growth. B___ and g____ should not share the same b______ or even be in the same r______. They may be afraid of the d_____.

Now depending on YOUR own personal experience, the missing words will vary from person to person. Luckily, we were told their was no correct response. I asked my mother who also is a teacher to complete this activity as well. Funnily enough, we had almost the same answers! Once I completed my response, I was relived to see other students had similar words and written about raising children and their health. Although after I finished and had a quick look at everyone else, I ‘googled’ the right answer and to my surprise it was about raising chickens from incubators. I did have a little giggle to myself, but it goes to show that Piaget’s theory of schemata does exisit! It perfectly illustrates how through experience you have formed your schemata and your schemata influences your answer! So maybe because we are all about education and caring for students, does this prove how all our ‘minds’ work?

It leaves me reflecting how I as a future educator can help students understand and construct multiple schemata to understand the world around them. Students will bring to the classroom their own prior knowledge and life experiences which will impact the way they view learning. How can I achieve this process with so many diverse students and their environments? I hope to further this more throughout the course.

My Thoughts about Education and ICT

I was introduced to ‘Wordle’ in my last professional experience by some very talented Year 5 students. It’s easy, fun, and a great ICT resource to use in the classroom! I just wanted to share this brainstorming activity to show you my thoughts about education and embedding my personal teaching values and ICT. Hope you enjoy!

Hello World!

31025_10151078024781174_252192669_n

Hi there! Welcome to my blog. This is where I will post my thoughts and experiences about my pre-service teaching journey!

I am in my third year of studying my Bachelor of Primary Education, Majoring in Sport, Health and Physical Education. I am eager to learn HEAPS about the world of ICT in the classroom environment. Although it seems scary at first, technology is all around us and I use it every single day! So what better way to engage in EDC3100 and get expert knowledge and tips of how to incorporate ICT in our classroom to prepare and enhance students in a ‘tech-savvy’ world.
